The proposed methods almost all rely on redirecting incoming solar radiation in such a way that this reduces the warming at the earth's surface by a certain amount. One proposal also involves increasing outgoing thermal radiation. The potential effectiveness of the methods is highly variable. What they have in common is the possibility for undesirable meteorological or environmental side effects.
