One possible approach is that of co-creative research. Characterized by the aspects of collaboration and creativity, new knowledge is to be generated together with external actors in a research process that is as equal as possible and made effective in a non-university context. Since the approach has been little researched empirically so far and at the same time there is little clarity regarding the understanding and the implementation, the present work deals with the production of co-creativity at universities in an explorative examination. Using the University of Hamburg (UHH) as an example, research projects are focused on and interviews are conducted with researchers at UHH who have realized co-creative research projects. It becomes clear that in the context of the projects many things are still new and open, so that the implementation is often characterized by trial and experimentation. The interviewees report, among other things, different formats of interaction, diverse outputs that deviate from classic scientific formats, but also challenges, e.g. with regard to the recognition of the projects. In addition to the generally positive descriptions and the perceived added value of the projects, it has become apparent that the researchers are often in a state of tension with regard to various aspects when it comes to creating co-creativity.
