After the severe droughts towards the end of the 20th century, rainfall is increasing again, but global warming and further weather extremes continue to cause problems for agriculture in the Sahel now and in the future. In response, smallholder farmers have developed a variety of adaptation measures, from cultivation techniques for water storage and soil improvement to agroforestry measures, which proved largely successful. Recently, however, political crises have made the security situation in key Sahel states worse, making it difficult to predict how this development will continue.
