On the way to a climate-neutral energy industry - Current developments in law and implementation: The rapid development of sustainable energy systems is an essential part of achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. It will ultimately also reduce the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. This article presents key political goals, legal steering instruments and current challenges on the path to a climate-neutral energy industry at international, European and national level. Climate neutrality targets are legally binding at all three levels. European and national legislators have also adopted specific reduction pathways and packages of measures for phasing out fossil fuels and expanding renewable energies. The heating and transport transition is progressing much more slowly than the electricity transition. In order to keep the 2 and 1.5 degree target achievable, the energy transition needs to be significantly accelerated at all levels.
