Contributions to the monitoring of the global water cycle: Both ground-based and satellite-based measurements are used to monitor the components of the water cycle. To enable a global assessment of water resources, the data is collated and processed in international data centres. In the field of ground-based measurements, data centres in Germany make an important contribution to several water-related parameters, in particular precipitation, runoff, soil moisture and water quality. Satellite observations, now spanning several decades, can also be used to compile climatological datasets on key parameters of the water cycle, including radiation and precipitation conditions. This chapter describes the activities of the water-related international data centres in Germany and provides an insight into key contributions based on satellite data. Limitations in data availability and quality are discussed.
